Regarding the process module - yes, it is cumbersome for hands on use. I must admit that I've bypassed it when I've used the raster to vector function in my own code, and the trouble with that for the general community is that it's akin to secret knowledge. Are you thinking of something specific when you say make the code more useful where it is ?
