I've reverted my overnight changes to the render module in svn. Geoserver builds OK for me now so (sigh) mea culpa. I'll work out the problem locally and confirm that Geoserver builds before re-applying the changes.
It seems that the problem lies in GeoServer's use of a deprecated DefaultMapContext constructor and some assumptions about the initial setting of the areaOfInterest field in that class.
