Opened a subtask to be able to provide the patch as the bug is closed. Sorry if
there is a better way.
Changes:
* Consolidate several switches between 'connection' thread where possible.
* Reduce the code done in 'connection' thread.
* Remove the weird synching on config. (Is that a common object as I think it
is? If it is we lock all connections..)
For us a geoserver testcase went from 4 hours to 6 minutes with the above
changes.
