I am a bit unhappy ignoring multiplicity on this one; if multiplicity
is allowed the XPath expression should return all of the values in a
collection. We do have a couple of functions that are willing to do
things with a list of values; but I expected when we started working
with multiplicity we would get more.

You should ask for a second opinion on this one I may be being a bit
to exacting on what is a pragmatic approch (treating a list of 1 as as
a single entry). What you describe is similar to the Perl practice of
being magic about converting a list to a single entry depending on
context.

However is there not an XPath syntax to explicitly grab the first
thing out of a list?

I am not going to have a chance to get to look at GEOT-2528 until next
weekend; we should ask another admin to help out on this one.
