I like this second option; however you are the module maintainer here
so we do trust your judgement.

I like the idea of H2 just to cut down on dependencies :-) I belive
Andrea Anotonello (as a PSC for the uDig community) also expressed
support for this direction.

So let me know and I will give this a try on udig trunk?
