Yes, this pre-release finishing is always tricky to put in the right 
place. I  prefer to use tags as the "flight data recorder" that never 
gets changed, but it is a difficult to do this when using Maven and 
there is version information in the poms. The release process is 
complicated enough as it is. Editing tags is a bit like using them as 
micro-branches.  :-)
