The rotated map demo looks cool and it would be pretty easy to do it.
I only remember one instance of anyone calling for this on the user
list though - I think it was in relation to mobile devices (?)

That was my first thought as well Ian. In my own apps it's generally
seemd most natural and convenient to specify a rectangle. Several
queries on the user list have been about how to do that too - although
that might just be because of the current 2.5 and 2.6 map pane APIs of
course.

We could have both options.  I can't see any problem with that.
