Welcome Stefan :-) Andrea is a good advocate; and we gladly welcome patches and participation.
If you need any help getting set up jump on IRC or email and ask questions; it is the only way the developers guide improves. I am very curious about the kind of patches you need to apply; one of the consequences of the library being LGPL is that the patches and modifications you make to it need to be published to your end users. Many teams simply submit patches to GeoTools Jira as a quick way of meeting that requirement; others just make a tarball and place it on a DVD. (LGPL does not effect what you can do with AtlasStyler and GeoPublisher - just what you do with your patched copy of GeoTools). I am especially interested in your feedback on the Style interfaces; we are gradually pulling down functionality from the Symbology Encoding specification. If you have any product anouncements for AtlasStyler or Geopublisher please let us know and we can mention them on the geotools blog.
