We need to change all ArcSDE connections to DirectConnect, because we need to
make the database redundant and connections using the ArcSDE server are a
single point of failure.
this is no problem in ArcGIS Desktop, but currently GeoServer seems not to
support this connection option.
We also want to connect to Multi-ArcSDE-Geodatabases in 1 Oracle database.
To use DirectConnections or multi-geodatabase, the "port" parameter should be
of type "String" instead of type "int".
Esri has support for DirectConnections in the JavaAPI started in version 9.2:

The "instance" parameter has to be used as type "String".
