I have not had any trouble checking out from svn today; can you try again.
Please note - the GeoTools library is actually comprised of many different
projects (each module or plugin is a seperate maven project). Maven supports
this very nicely where a single top-level pom.xml file can slurp up all the
modules and build them in one go.
Now that does not exactly match up with the expectations of your eclipse
maven tool. Indeed it is the reason I have held off using it...
The developers guide describes what to do:

After you have done this you should still be able to launch maven builds on
individual projects using your eclipse front end... let us know how it
works?
Note the developers guide is a wiki so if you figure out what to do with
M2Eclipse feel free to share with the rest of us :-)
