Eh, I have the impression much has been done using FeatureCollection already: Andrea Antonello's work, all Sextante integrations (contained in the Sextante own repo due to licensing issues), GeoServer own WPS assumptions. Yes, they can be all reworked, but with a certain amount of pain included.
