sorry for the late reply but I was away for vacations till today.
GeoTools Trunk leverages on ImageI/O-Ext 1.0.7 which actually uses a
customized GDAL 1.4.5 version (since ImageI/O-Ext 1.0.5).
The ImageI/O-Ext project contains ready-to-use native libraries for
Linux/Windows.
You can go to [1] and navigate through Releases -> 1.0.7 -> native libraries
and then select the proper OS.
There is a README file which provides a link to download the compressed
archive containing the native libs.
Once you get them, you can use them, by making sure they are available on
the PATH (or LD_LIBRARY_PATH in case you are on Linux)
