It is intentional, there is no more a directory data store. Each store
dealing with
files can provide a "directory" version of its factory, the shapefile
one now does.
So to open a directory of shapefiles you just need to have the shapefile store
around.

Btw, not sure if the changes I'm talking about happened before or after M3.
