David: Thanks for the pointer. At first glance it looks like it can provide a good template.
You are correct in that the mongo spatial indexing is only good for points and does not handle projections. I think it can be helpful for basic bounding box filtering so I was thinking about the idea of writing some code to serialize the geometries as lists of points and use that to create an index.
