+1, I'm also waiting for trunk to be free to start committing work for the on
the fly dataset transformations in rendering.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about look for the rendering transformation
thread and have a look at this image:

and think it was made out of a single coverage and a single sld file ;-)
(contours are extracted and painted on the fly)

Eventually we'd like to backport it to the stable series after vetting
it on trunk for a bit.
