Ah, forgot to say one thing... I did not try, but I think that  with these
transformations one could also do heatmaps on the fly (which have been
talked about a few times in geoserver land I think).

Whether that would work performance wise or not I guess it's a matter
of how many points compose the source data set, unlike contour maps there
is no good optimization to be made to avoid taking into consideration all of
the points falling in the currently displayed data
