You are reminded to read the developers guide (fun with maven I know; there
is also handy instructions on loading the geotools formatting settings into
eclipse, headers, test cases, and ... the number one instruction of:
"don't break the build" :-)
You are already doing a good job of communicating on the email list (which I
thank you for); but I will encourage to ask questions as you go; in
particular on the developers guide stuff[1].
