Do any of the uses you have in mind call for non-numeric attributes ?
I have a use case where a String attribute would be good.

What about an integer "level" that can be associated with the line ?

I can recycle the code that's already in there for densifying vector polygons.

A new class, yes. The polygon classes Hexagon and Oblong have a base
class GridElement. How would you feel about LineElement ?
