I'm against still using java 5 for a few reasons: - it's very hard to even get that JDK (even more so if you are on a Apple) - our code sometimes breaks in JDK 6, but we don't see it, yet JDK 6 is the vast majority of the deploys - java 5 is visibly slower, meaning our builds are taking a hit because of that (and everybody does a full build before committing, _right_?) - java 6 contains a more complete xml subsystem, meaning we can probably drop some dependencies - it gives us access to a more complete concurrent package as well as a number of small handy api - java 6 is about to reach its end of life, shall we switch only when it becomes painful again to find the tools to develop? Long story short, I've been waiting for years to allow production sites to upgrade, and quite honestly I had enough :-p. Judging by the poll results http://www.micropoll.com/a/MicroPollData?id=423595&mode=html it seems I'm not the only one. The GeoServer pool still needs some advertising so we're a bit behind in term of votes, let's see what happens there: http://www.micropoll.com/a/MicroPollData?id=423614&mode=html Cheers Andrea -- ------------------------------------------------------- Ing.
