Even for direct layer it would be fine; they will usually return an empty
feature collection.
My plans are to back port from uDig:
- some kind of ScalebarLayer
- some kind of NorthArrowLayer
For GeoTools I was hoping we could make a GridLayer, IconLayer.
And I was hoping we could make an example of a tool using a direct layer for
visual feedback; rather than watching people make feature collections again and
again and again and again on the user list.

All of the data generated in your IT infrastructure is seriously valuable.
Why? It contains a definitive record of application performance, security
threats, fraudulent activity, and more. Splunk takes this data and makes
sense of it. IT sense. And common sense.
