In the past we have had successful code sprints based around either:
a) some kind of major work where all hands on deck makes sense - this takes a 
bit of prep (rolling out a Query Join implementation would be a good candidate 
here)
b) some kind of collaboration across projects - of the OSGi migration was ready 
it would be a good candidate (it would be a good chance to check compatibility 
with Spring/GeoServer and Equinox/uDig projects)

We have also used this as an opportunity to start new developers out on 
unsupported modules; not as much fun but useful :-)
