Hi Jody, I forged ahead with an approach that seems to be working, ie. passing tests and working in tutorial apps.
The changes are briefly described on the issue: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOT-3810 MapContent and MapViewport have both been updated, as have the associated test classes.
