Cool; I have not caught up to Jira since foss4g so thanks for brining 
discussion here. 

So the main thing here is the introduction of commons http client. I have 
worked with it in the past and don't mind it; but would rather be removing 
dependencies then adding them.

If we had talked earlier I would of looked into using the Java Authentication 
support; I assume you must of hit the limit before bringing in httpclient?

I agree with the idea of moving Base64 code into gt-main (or gt-metadata as a 
utility class). The wps client code has no good reason to avoid 
AbstractOpenWebService - it is just the code was tied to geoapi at the time and 
kept changing.
