Fix For: 2.7.4
Back-port changes from trunk (including GEOT-3805, GEOT-3810, GEOT-3815) to the
2.7.x branch. This will allow us to have the same unit tests for these classes
and also make it possible for a mythical volunteer to get gt-swing, which
depends on these changes on trunk, working again in 2.7.
