Well my preference is for shapefile-ng to work out; as for in memory sorting
was provided by default by abstract datastore (but got disabled in the query
capability refactoring). The implementation was not the worst ever but I
understand why you do not find it suitable.
If I am forced to restore the in memory sorting I may end up adding a
connection parameter: something like "sorting: (disabled|memory|disk) - where
your new implementation would make use of "disk".
