Thanks, Andrea. I realized that this isn't a very likely culprit, but
since the symptom seemed to be a recent development this was one suspect
that needed to be included.
The transformation is definitely stateless (thanks to your earlier advice).
I guess I'll have to try and figure out how to set up a test scenario
that will let me bisect down to the problem.
