I don't know if this is relevant to Fred's requirements, but rather
than drawing a secondary image into a corner of the main map pane,
perhaps a separate "overview" pane which could be docked inside the
main pane might be a nicer and more flexible way to go.

Actually, to do that you just need a pair of linked MapViewports
associated with a single MapContent don't you ?
