Actually, both of the ways I've suggested above should preserve the insertion order (it's not true in general as you note, but it should work for the specific case of shapefiles)


True, my answer was in anticipation of the user using the ordering in a non-specific way :)

One example that popped into my head is relying on the file order to also control the drawing order.
