I just had a quick look at the Zhao-Saalfeld paper as well as the
review paper of Shi and Cheung:

One thing I don't understand, and I'm hoping you can explain, is how
one guards against simplified contours crossing each other. This slide
presentation on Alan Saalfeld's web site mentions this and related
problems:

...but his proposed solution involves an initial DP simplification,
followed by a set of convex hull operations which sounds very
intensive.
