This slide presentation on Alan Saalfeld's web site mentions this and related problems: http://www.geology.ohio-state.edu/~saalfeld.1/DPGnlize.ppt ...but his proposed solution involves an initial DP simplification, followed by a set of convex hull operations which sounds very intensive.
