An earlier cut of GeoTools has the idea of a FeatureDocument, which better
captured the ideas you are referring to, the javadoc was full of grand ideas
(support for references etc…). Alas it was never implemented.
So we are aware of the gap, but in true chicken and egg fashion, we cannot
attract funding until there are servers, and servers cannot attract funding
until clients can parse it.
