Yes - Processing collection throws IOExceptions, BaseFeatureCollection follows
the "keep calm and carry on" moto.

It does (and indeed that is where the methods came from).
You had a number of "helper" methods for subclasses, I left those in place
(deprecated) in order not to break anybody.
