Hi all,
here is a proposal to upgrade the shapefile-ng module to supported status,
and make shapefile become (temporarily) an unsupported module named
shapefile-old:

The API changes are minimal, most well written client code won't notice,
the code builds fine, GeoServer only needed a couple one liners to build
and work against the new shapefile:
https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/pull/204
I have no word from uDig, as far as I know they are stuck on an old version
of GeoTools since they still haven't upgraded to the changes of the feature
collection cleanup.
I believe this is a good time to perform the swap as we have months ahead
before the release, if there are lingering issues we should be able to spot
them and sort them out before the release
