GeoTools Developers:
My nephew expressed interest in working on a Google Summer of Code Project
in Java. (He is currently going to school to be a civil engineer and is
working at as a GIS intern for my surveying company.)
I'd like to know if there would be any interest among the GeoTools
developers in having my nephew work on a project for low level code that
could be used by OpenJUMP and GeoTools. Here are some project ideas:
1) Surface Modeling. As part of this project we'd define a simple text
format to store TIN data, write code to build a TIN object from JTS points,
and allow access to the TIN for things like watershed analysis or the
creation of hillshades. I'd want to support breaklines in the TIN creation
process.
2) Linear Referencing: As part of this project we'd support linear
referencing of JTS geometries. The code could be used to, for example,
create point features from a linear event table.
3) Network Topology: As part of this project we'd define a simple tabular
format to store network topology and would write code to create this
topology data from input JTS geometries.
Let me know as soon as you can if there is interest in any of the ideas
listed above. We need to submit our application tonight.
I'm willing to mentor my nephew.
