Hi,
while working on some benchmarks for an improved pisces renderer for
OpenJDK 8 (see
http://mail.openjdk.java.net/pipermail/2d-dev/2013-June/003475.html, sorry
for the table formatting, it's HTML...) I stumbled into three significant
roadblocks in the GeoTools code base that limited scalability, and tried to
fix them:
https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOT-4491
https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOT-4492
https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOT-4493

The pull request with the three commits is here:
https://github.com/geotools/geotools/pull/213

I'd be happy if someone could give it a review. In particular the first one
also limits scalability for raster data access, as coverage factories also
need the default hints (Simone was just telling me about that a few days
ago)

Cheers
Andrea
