What are your thought concerning the removal of the direct references of SUN
encoder?
I would would have thought that it would have been poor form to have direct
references.

I would not merge this pull request for the moment. I would like to improve
this code a bit, however I am not sure I will/should remove the direct
references to the SUN encoders.
