Commonly java allows you to set a httpProxy environment variable for hosts that should be connected to through the HttpProxy. SimpleHttpClient doesn't make use of this variable making it hard to use the GeoServer WMS cascading datastore within a proxied enviroment when some of the machines to be proxied are outside the domain.

Code to implement this functionality exists in multithreadedHttpClient
