Two observations (just for sake of chatting):
* why do you have a FeatureStore, since it cannot do writes? :-)

Which other abstract data store class would you have used? It seemed to me that it was the most appropriate one to do it with the least code, but perhaps I am wrong. However, perhaps it is interesting to leave implementation of writing to it open to the future.

* wondering how difficult it would be to turn this code into a GML store too... I mean, believe
  good part of the architecture would be pretty much the same?

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Perhaps all that would be different is the initialisation of the parser with a different scheme and configuration?
