The idea is to support mapinfo .TAB files that accompany .TIFF files in geotools/geoserver (read-only).

If the geotiff reader fails to find the metadata in the .tiff file itself or in a .wld file,... it will finally check for a .tab file and try to parse this to get the projection and crs.

Mapinfo .tab file is proprietary and has no official specifications.
The mapinfo .tab reader will take two things out of it:

  • control points, to make a transform
  • the coordinate reference system, which needs to be converted from the mapinfo syntax to wkt.
