I doubt it. The unfiltered case is in fact the only one in which one can
think of providing a native optimization,
however the ContentFeatureSource does not help much in implementing paging
only in some cases, it's more
of a all or nothing situation: if you implement paging for one optimized
case, you'll basically have to replicate
the ContentFeatureSource support code for the non optimized ones.
Mind, in the past I actually had to perform the opposite optimization in
uDig: the renderer was fully
multithreaded, so each layer was rendering in its own thread.
A map with 20 or so layers was bringing the machine to its knees because of
disk thrashing, each
thread making the disk jump to a different location: we actually got a
significant speedup and
gained back stability by making sure only one thread at a time was
rendering a resource located
on the local disk.
SSDs change the equation here, but I believe a minority of the machines
have them nowadays outside
of the Apple user base.
