The error "invalid column index" occurs when updating a layer.
Reason:
There is a bug in class org.geotools.jdbc.JDBCDataStore.java, method
updateSQLPS, line 3998 (geotools v10.2):
setPreparedFilterValues(ps, toSQL, i, cx);
variable i must be replaced by variable j:
setPreparedFilterValues(ps, toSQL, j, cx);
