This limitation (only bug fixes in the maintenance branch) is not in the
geotools proposal:
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOTOOLS/Extended+Release+Schedule

I don't think it's in the GeoServer one either (geoserver.org is not
anwering me...),
I certainly did not want that limitation to be included when I proposed the
change.

But I agree we should pay double extra care when backporting anything to
the 10.x
branch
