Hi,
the SOLR based store module just landed no trunk, in the unsupported area
(the module already had a +1
from Justin some time ago on this list).
The store is pretty simple, just give it a url to a SOLR server, and a
field that will be used to discriminate
to which "feature type" a certain document is related to, and it will
generate a list of feature types,
then configure which attribute should be exposed in each layer in a way
similar to JDBC virtual
tables, and you're in business.
The test code probably clarifies this serving as an example (the first bit
collects the available attributes
from the SOLR server, the second one sets up a layer exposing all of them):

The code is well tested, code coverage is at 84%, and works similarly to
JDBC stores,
requiring a live SOLR test server, but setting up all the test data in the
setup of the tests
themselves. The connection params are as usual setup in
$HOME/.geotools/solr.properties
which may look as follows:
solr_url=http://localhost:8983/solr/TestGeotoolsCore
layer_name_field=status_s
Once GeoTools 12.0 is out, I'd like to backport the store in the
unsupported section of Geotools 12.x too
