NetCDF CF (ClimateForecast) convention defines a set of standardNames for NetCDF variables as well as related canonical units.
They are also defined within an XML file like this: http://cfconventions.org/Data/cf-standard-names/28/src/cf-standard-name-table.xml
We could create a NetCDFCFVariables parser/checker which contains all the defined CF entries in order to check whether a provided name is CF compliant and get the canonical unit for that if needed.
