This community module seems to be missing a couple of things to replace
what I need to do:
- ability to specify a list of values instead of the min - max values only
- ability to assign labels to color map entries
-2- It would be good if we could take coverage statistics into account

>From what I see in dynamic color maps documentation (
http://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/community/colormap/index.html) ,
they are already taken into account (only if the coverage satisfies certain
requirements like having an auxiliary files generated through GDAL and
being a mosaic) using a specific function (gridCoverageStats). Probably we
could:
- port the function out of the community module and make it available in
the core
- make it work on other types of coverages (like simple geotiffs)
- find the way to avoid having to use gdal to generate statistics
In general, I think that adapting the community extension to do what I need
with my patch is a different kind of work, with different impact on the
codebase, so I would, in any case eventually do both in parallel. I mean:
my proposal is a quick (but not dirty) improvement that allows a small
amount of dinamicity in color maps without adding extensions or community
modules and it's ready now (almost). This does not prevent generalizing the
community module to handle more dynamic cases that would in the future
cover my use case too.
Regards,
Mauro
