Using the Oracle plugin with GeoServer I attempted to set the Session Startup SQL for an Oracle data store. This is ineffective regardless of how simple the SQL might be. My test cases uses "select sysdate from dual".

Sometimes GeoServer shows an error immediately upon saving the data store. I'm not sure why the behavior varies. But regardless, upon restart of GeoServer an exception is logged as the code attempts to unwrap the LifeCycle connection to get the native Oracle connection.
The data store is then disabled.
Andrea's comment on the user list reads:
"I checked the code, in that case we have the native Oracle connection twice wrapped,
first in the lifecycle wrapper, and then in the connection pool one, but the code
only attempts one level of unwrapping.
One year ago we changed the unwrapping logic to avoid the logs being flooded with
messages, I guess that made the code regress (the old version was not exactly
trying to do multiple unwrap levels either, it must have worked by accident)."
