Hi Patrick, some time ago I found out that there is a problem with schemaLocation handling in GeoTools/GeoServer: The parser does not treat "newline" properly. The result is a hanging thread until a network timeout occurs.
I have not found the time to report an issue and I also currently do not remember which code was really causing the error :-) Try to remove newslines from the XML schemaLocation attributes you submit and check if it is fast again. Otherwise you may have a different problem.
