You are module maintainer here so let's focus on approach. I am happy to
write the results of this email thread up as a proposal if needed.

I kind of like (2) especially we we can use the "bigdate" already recorded.
We wrote this api for a situation like this and I would love to see it used.

It also has the advantage of less changes in client code as I understand it?
