my name is Ugo, I have recently started to work for GeoSolutions. Since
JAITools is not being actively supported anymore, we decided to start to
move the parts of JAITools used by JAI-EXT, GeoTools and GeoServer into
JAI-EXT, that is better supported. We have the blessing of Michael Bedward
of JAITools who was happy about JAITools bits being reused.
The process of moving JAITools into JAI-EXT was started by making the
existing code of JAI-EXT independent on JAITools (see JAI-EXT release
1.0.13, in which some support classes, ROIGeometry and ImageLayout2 were
moved into JAI-EXT). The whole process of moving JAITools into JAI-EXT will
take some time: other functions should be moved and checked the possible
overlap between operations that exist in both libraries. This is currently
under study.
As mentioned above, JAI-EXT 1.0.13 is a first step in the direction of
avoiding any dependency from JAITools. Therefore, GeoTools pom and classes
are being updated to reflect the changes in JAI-EXT 1.0.13. You might have
seen the issues GEOT-5629, GEOT-5630 and GEOT-5631, whose related pull
requests have been created today. Similar pull requests on GeoServer will
follow soon.
We thought it was better to inform the community about this idea, also to
explain the existence of some pull requests that might look strange,
without knowing that this process JAITools -> JAI-EXT is ongoing.
