If there is an interest, we can certainly provide a space for and
support in making these widgets. All we are saying is that the widgets
we have in geotools right now are not supported, we have some great
ideas of how to make new ones. If you do need a supported rendering
system please consider the uDig project :-)
We would love additional users! And yes if we back port the uDig
rendering system to geowidgets I think everyone will benefit. Here is
the deal, the uDig team is very focused on improving uDig for release
1.1 during November. I know that having a decent rendering system
available to swing based apps is important to people (note the uDig
rendering system is Java 2D based so there is no technical SWT/AWT stuff
getting in the way). A few people have made inquires about getting us
to do the work, but until we hear different we really want to get decent
editing in uDig.
Now I would be happy to share the design, and provide development
documentation if people want to start on things without me. My short
term plans all involve fixing geotools at a much lower level. Random
access data APIs, selection objects (rather then filters), a new feature
model. Basically there is enough hard work to do at the geotools level
which is why the library is interested in getting out of the widget game.
Actually my intimidate need is improving the SLD objects so we can make
a user interface for them. If anyone does have widget time it would be a
nice way to start out working with geowidgets, we will be done this bit
of work one way or another next week so the time commitment is not too
great.

It is too bad we still don't have usable and "official" GUI
components. Many projects demand a UI and it would be of great help to
have these done so we don't need to reinvent the wheel each time.
I believe many gt users are coming out and asking yet the same
questions regarding GUI components. If I were in a position to make
decissions, I'd take note.
Just think, if we want people to switch from propietary software and
adopt geotools, we need to provide these widgets. The easiest and most
effective tutorial to have a new user hooked up is the one that
teaches him how to "see" his data. StyledMapPane just doesn't cut it.
Just push it down the road (through geowidgets or whatever) so we can
all give a hand and have this integrated into the main codebase along
with the rest of the (awesome) library.

Sean,
I've looked over the code for the StyledMapPane and found that there
were not many options in terms of the interactive tools. You may have
to write these features yourself. I get the impression that the
GeoTools project is focused on different concerns.
As for question #3, I keep thinking that there is a way to retrieve a
geospatial feature based on a map coordinate, but am unsure of the
methods to do so.
Sorry this isn't much help. I guess I just have similar questions for
the GeoTools team.
