Hey Peter Fay,

Actually, I'm slowly working on these docs. Once I get an initial take
on referencing, I'll turn to learning and then documenting filters and
expressions.

Meanwhile you might find stuff in the 'pile of code' that is the wiki.
Up to now the policy has been "let's throw examples at the wiki" which
turns out to be a bit of a mess, especially so since the geotools
codebase is still morphing wildly. (Divide the version number by ten for
a version number that can be compared to other free software projects).
The 'snippets' on the wiki can be found below:
http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOTOOLS/Use
and if there are examples there, then they will give you ideas of stuff
to try. However, your mileage *will* vary---they are not documentation
and most probably won't compile with whatever version of the library you
are using. There may also be examples in the source distribution but you
will have to poke around to find them. You could look in
  org.geotools.demo
and in the filter module. No guarantees but that's where I'll look when
I try to tackle that area.

If you do cobble together working examples, I would love to see them and
draw on them for the docs I hope to write. I'll eventually want to work
systematically first trying to find and use any convenience functions
and then doing stuff "from scratch" to show what's inside a
filter/expression.

Yes, the docs are missing, as all of us who try to use geotools realize.
Like all free software projects, the developers are developing and the
users can't really document since they don't understand the code so the
docs lag behind. Perhaps in another six months or so they'll be
something solid to get users started.

cheers,
adrian
